Tizkmoudine
Tizkmoudine is a village located in the southern part of Morocco, bordering the desert. Its population, organized in an association, decided to preserve the ancient village, abandoned half a century ago, and bring it back to life. To achieve this, the village association came up with the idea of a hospitality project, offering more than just a stopover for travelers, rather an experience of discovery, exchange and authentic sharing between travellers and the local community.
This initiative complements the safeguarding of the village’s collective granary, which was initiated by the local authorities with the help of a Moroccan association “Les Gardiens de la Mémoire”, and an American NGO, the Global Heritage Fund.
Unprecedented hospitality
700,000 heures Impact offers travelers the chance to experience the daily life of a community, to discover its rich heritage, the breadth of its culture and the ancestral knowledge of its inhabitants.
Tizkmoudine is the first Regenerative Hospitality project created and implemented by 700,000 heures Impact. As part of the regeneration of the place, 700,000 heures Impact has co-created with the village association a multi-year holistic program supporting the population vision of a regenerated Tizkmoudine.
The implementation started early 2023 and include the following projects:
- A weaving cooperative: an income opportunity for women, and a way to magnify local know-how in arts & crafts.
- A construction cooperative: leveraging the local workforce to contribute to the restoration of houses and alleys in the village.
- A hospitality services cooperative: offering local tours, traditional dance and music and the curation of a museum.
- A cooperative for the restoration of the palm grove: contributing to the regeneration of natural ecosystems and the development of new value chains (transformation of dates, production of compost from palm tree branches, etc.).
- The development of subsistence agriculture: planting and growing fruits and vegetables for local consumption.
- The creation of a garden for aromatic and medicinal plants: unlocking the potential of endemic plants and ancestral knowledge.
- Implementing educational and social activities for children: offering women time to work while bolstering children knowledge of languages, science and agriculture.
